Birkenhead Waterfront and Surrounds Phase 2

Wirral Council has commissioned a design team to deliver highway and public realm improvements to Wirral waterfront and its surrounding areas. The includes highway, active travel and public realm improvements to Woodside Waterfront and its surrounding areas, covering the area from and including the Argyle Street/ Conway Street roundabout to Woodside Ferry Terminal.

This project is called ‘Birkenhead Waterfront and Surrounds’ and includes the below areas:

  • Argyle Street (including Conway St roundabout)
  • Hamilton Square
  • Hamilton Street
  • Woodside Gyratory / Woodside Bus Turnaround
  • Woodside / Waterfront Promenade

Its aim is to improve the connections between Birkenhead Town Centre retail area and the Woodside Waterfront, to stimulate economic growth, increase footfall and improve the transport infrastructure for users throughout this area. There have been previous rounds of consultation on this project related to the earlier design stages.

The project design team have been progressing how these areas will look, connect and function. This has been informed following analysis of the previous feedback received from the community when comments were collected in relation to the earlier designs. The Council is now in a position to provide a project wide update and to seek further comment before the final stage of detailed design work is commissioned in November 2024. This project is funded from various funding sources including the Towns Fund and Levelling Up Fund via the UK Government, alongside Active Travel funding from Liverpool City Region Combined Authority. This project is also part of the wider programme of regeneration activities in Birkenhead as part of the 2040 Framework.
