2023: Funding identified and proposal developed

Natural Flood Management (NFM) funding identified. Cheshire Wildlife Trust and Wirral Council begin developing a natural flood management wetland proposal at Hoylake Carrs in partnership with the Environment Agency. Initial feasibility indicated high suitability for NFM delivery.

January → December 2024

2024: Hydrological modelling, designs developed and funding secured

Hydrological modelling confirms the site’s suitability for floodwater storage; Concept designs developed for scrapes, bunds and flow-control features; £430,000 of Environment Agency funding secured.

January 2025

January 2025: Formal committee approval

The scheme receives formal committee approval from Wirral Council at the Environment, Climate Emergency, and Transport Committee, confirming funding acceptance, governance arrangements and the move into active delivery.

June → August 2025

Summer 2025: Site surveys completed

Technical surveys and site assessments undertaken, alongside volunteer activity establishing baseline monitoring programmes for wildlife and water levels.

September → November 2025

Autumn 2025: Final technical design

Survey outputs integrated into the final technical design, with wetland layout, bund levels, flow controls and long-term management plans being finalised. License and permit applications submitted to Environment Agency.

August 2026

End of summer 2026: Works complete

The works are scheduled to be complete by the end of summer 2026.

March 2027

March 2027: Project ends

The project will run until March 2027 to allow time for establishment and monitoring.
