New Chester Road Active Travel Route Review

In response to feedback, the council is undertaking a review of schemes funded by the Active Travel Fund Tranche 1. One of these schemes is New Chester Road. The scheme was introduced in 2020 to provide better and safer connections for all road users between New Ferry and Birkenhead. The scheme introduced light segregation units called ‘orcas’ along the existing cycle lane to protect cyclists from vehicles.

The review will help us to consider options for the future of New Chester Road, such as:

  • Maintaining the current layout of New Chester Road with no changes.
  • Removing the current active travel route on New Chester Road and reverting the layout to how it was before changes were made in 2020 (funding would be required).
  • Making adjustments to the current layout of New Chester Road, retaining an active route (funding would be required).

As part of the review, we would like feedback from all road users on what they think would be best for the future of New Chester Road.

Your feedback and comments will be combined with traffic, speed and collision data as well as design guidance from the Department of Transport (DfT) to ensure the route is operating as intended – to make it easier and safer for people to get to the places they need no matter how they travel. All of this information will then be presented to the Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport committee for consideration on future plans for the route.

We want to know how you are currently using the route and what option you would you believe would be best for the future of this route. To tell us what you think about the route, please complete the below survey.

Please note that New Chester Road is included as part of a route proposed in the emerging Core Active Travel Network (CATN) for Wirral. Public consultation on CATN has recently ended and the results of which will be reported to the council’s Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport committee during in spring 2025. The CATN is for much longer-term project, that will look at further improvements to key routes in Wirral – whereas any feedback provided in this consultation for the New Chester Road review will be reviewed by committee to consider addressing changes and improvements in the near future, subject to available budget.

A map of the Core Active Travel Network can be found in the documents section, where this active travel route forms part of route 11.

This consultation is now closed.
