The Safer Streets 2 Project was a crime reduction programme in Central Birkenhead and Seacombe which was completed in March 2022.
With over £400,000 of investment from the Home Office, the Police & Crime Commissioner for Merseyside worked with Wirral Council on initiatives which aim to reduce crime and improve safety in some of the borough’s most deprived areas.
Last year the first round of funding for the Safer Streets project was spent in North Birkenhead on 40 new alleygates, 150 upgraded streetlights and new CCTV cameras.
This time around the funding was used to install around 30 new alleygates in Central Birkenhead and Seacombe, as well as new CCTV and streetlighting upgrades.
Alleygates are a substantial barrier constructed from perforated mild steel sheeting, with roller bars to prevent climbing. They are council owned and maintained, provided free of charge along with keys unique to each alleyway, to adjoining residents and businesses and have proven highly effective in reducing fly tipping, anti-social behaviour, arson and other crimes.
We are asking you to complete a short survey so that we can assess the impact of the Safer Streets 2 project overall. We want to know your thoughts on the new alleygates, CCTV provision and streetlighting, including whether or not you have noticed a reduction in crime or anti-social behaviour in the area.
The results of this consultation will help the council target resources more effectively and help structure bids for future projects.
