Assisted Travel Review

We Asked

The public were asked for their feedback on assisted travel to support a review of the two travel policies; the Assisted Travel Policy for Children and Young People Aged 5-16 2023-24 and Post-16 Assisted Travel Statement 2023-24. The consultation ran from 13 October 2025 to 4 January 2026. The questions focused on three key proposals:

• Proposal 1- Including ages 0-4 in the Assisted Travel Policy for Children Young People.
• Proposal 2- Additional £3 per day supplement for parents/carers for the Personal Transport Budget
• Proposal 3- Introduction of a Learner Contribution of £680 in the Post 16 Transport Policy Statement.

You Said

171 people responded to the consultation. Some of the key results from the consultation were:

• 44.6% of respondents were positive about the Assisted Travel Policy for Children and Young People Aged 0-16 being extended to include 0–4-year-olds whilst 23.2% disagreed.
• Respondents were almost equally split over the supplementary provision of £3 per day for personal transport budgets (36.7% positive vs 36.1% negative).
• Most respondents (55.0%) were negative about the introducing a contribution for learners aged 16-19 in the Post-16 Assisted Travel Statement with 21.9% being positive.

We Did

The results of the survey were used to revise the proposals and then reviewed by the Children, Young People and Education Committee in January 2026. The policy is being developed further ahead of being published.
