As a result of complaints relating to dangerous and inconsiderate driving and parking, the council are looking to introduce camera technology to support the existing moving traffic restriction in place on Bebington Road (between Boundary Road and New Chester Road), that runs through New Ferry Centre.
What is a moving traffic restriction?
A moving traffic restriction is usually introduced for road safety reasons or to maintain safe and easy access to the road for all road users. These types of restrictions used to be enforced by Merseyside Police but following public consultation Wirral Council was granted permission in 2023 by the Department for Transport to enforce these types of restrictions via Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera technology.
There has been a moving traffic restriction on the section of Bebington Road that runs through New Ferry Centre, in place since 1986. These restrictions were introduced to help reduce unnecessary through traffic and obstructive parking, whilst still enabling businesses to operate loading and unloading - keeping the road through New Ferry centre clear of parked vehicles.
The camera technology is proposed to be introduced to help enforce this existing traffic restriction on Bebington Road.
You can view the area of New Ferry Centre that will be covered by the ANPR camera technology on the below map.
Before introducing ANPR technology into a new location, the public must be provided with an opportunity to raise any concerns about the introduction of the camera technology.
