Northside Neighbourhood Framework Consultation

The survey has now closed, thank you for your contributions.

Wirral Council is developing a framework for future development of the Northside area. The proposed development aims to create new modern buildings for business and industrial use.

The Northside forms a crucial part of the spine in the Birkenhead 2040 Framework stretching from Birkenhead Town Centre all the way to New Brighton. The area is between the Dock Road and the Kingsway Tunnel approach, which benefits from direct access to the M53 Motorway. It is an existing area of employment uses, some of which are underutilised, and vacant contaminated sites capable of remediation. Northside falls within the Liverpool City Region Freeport area, which provides a number of incentives to encourage new development and job creation.

The development aims to create attractive, inclusive, safe, welcoming and sustainable workplaces that relate well to their surroundings. It also aims to support the relocation of industrial uses from other neighbourhoods across the urban area and support the wider regeneration of Birkenhead, by ensuring that businesses are, where possible, not displaced from Birkenhead.

The key objectives of the Neighbourhood Framework are:

  • To promote good design through the development process.
  • To open up investment opportunities for high-quality employment development.
  • To meet the needs of business and create attractive and successful workplaces.
  • To ensure that employment development is sensitive to its context and improves the character and quality of the local area.
  • To create employment development that is well-connected, inclusive and accessible.
  • To enhance place-marketing and inward investment potential.
  • To enhance the sense of safety and security within and beyond developments.
  • To create a more energy efficient and less polluting development.
